School - Satchels, school backpacks & knapsacks

School is the start of the serious side of life, but it also brings a lot of excitement and new friends! To make the start of the school day fun every day, good equipment is essential. Ergonomically shaped satchels and knapsacks, practical sports bags, breast bags, rucksacks and purses are ready for the big adventure.

School bags and satchels

When buying a satchel, it's not just the design that's important - small children's backs don't yet have the strength to carry a heavy satchel and are dependent on an ergonomically shaped satchel. A good school bag has features that distribute the weight on the child's shoulders and back, thus minimizing the strain. A stable interior layout is just as important as well-fitting shoulder straps and, if possible, a waist belt, which can also be retrofitted to many models.

Reflective zones or even flashing LED strips ensure that your child is not overlooked in traffic, even when visibility is poor. Most school satchels today meet the strict guidelines of DIN 58124 and carry the TÜV seal.

What good satchels can do

  • Sturdy base
  • Ergonomic and padded back section and shoulder straps
  • Height-adjustable carrying strap system
  • Various compartments and pockets
  • Reflective and fluorescent surfaces

Satchel sets

Choosing a school bag set kills several birds with one stone. The satchel sets are often made up of 4 or 5 pieces and usually consist of a satchel, a pencil case and/or a pencil roll, gym bag or sports bag and a neck pouch. Some cases are already equipped. So everything is there for a successful start and the design always matches.

School backpacks

The requirements for school backpacks are similar to those for satchels and school knapsacks. Although the cut and design are more casual and are aimed more at slightly older schoolchildren, quality and ergonomics should not be compromised. A good school backpack also has features that distribute the weight on the child's shoulders and back, thus minimizing the strain. A stable interior layout is just as important here as well as well-fitting shoulder straps and, if possible, a waist belt that stabilizes the school backpack on the child's back.

The right fit for the backpack

Every child develops differently and has a different size and posture. It is therefore important that the backpack can be individually adjusted and "grows" with the child. This makes the school bag a great companion for several years.

An ergonomically shaped and well-padded back section is essential. It should be possible to adjust the shoulder straps and hip belt to the respective body size. A hip belt relieves the shoulders by shifting the weight to the hips. The satchel should therefore be as light as possible.

  • In principle, the satchel should sit horizontally and close to the body.
  • The satchel should be worn above the buttocks and be flush with the shoulders. The correct height can be set using an adjustable back system.
  • The hip belt should be worn on the hip bone to relieve pressure on the shoulders.
  • The shoulder straps must be tightened so that the satchel fits snugly against the body. The position control straps can be used to position the satchel closer to the body.

Caution: Shoulder straps that are too long or too short can put strain on the back and lead to poor posture.

Pack correctly

School books, exercise books, pencil case, coloring and sports equipment, snacks and drinks. This adds up to a lot of weight that the little ones have to carry throughout the day. Pack heavy items such as books as far back as possible, i.e. close to the back.

Books that are not needed should stay at home or at school. Light items such as the case can be packed towards the front. Drinking bottles and snacks can be stowed in the side and front pockets.

Tip

Make sure that your child carries the satchel over both shoulders. Carrying it on one side by the handle should also be avoided. It is essential to distribute the weight evenly, otherwise it can lead to poor posture and back injuries.

Safety

The journey to school usually starts early in the morning when it is still dark. It is therefore particularly important that your child is clearly visible in traffic. School bags should therefore have retroreflective and fluorescent surfaces.

According to DIN standard 58124, 10% of the front and side surfaces must be made of retroreflective material and 20% of fluorescent orange-red or yellow. Other fluorescent colors such as green or purple, which also increase visibility, are not covered by this standard.

In addition, bright clothing, reflective bands on the arm or leg and LED lights attached to the knapsack increase visibility in road traffic.

Care & cleaning

School satchels are used every day and have to put up with a lot. Smaller stains can usually be removed with a damp cloth or a soft brush. For larger stains, the satchel can be cleaned in the shower using a mild detergent. It is best to clean the satchel before the weekend or during the vacations. This allows the school bag to dry properly.
